So, Brave New World. A creepy, technological world, based on the ideals of unity and "one for all-ness". We all know this, but after reading Lyotard's theories, the novel shows many examples of his ideals...
Lyotard states in one of his theories on knowledge, "that no knowledge will survive that cannot be translated into computer language--into quantities of information". This statement is bold, but is very relevant to the ideas presented in Brave New World. The whole idea of creating people in mass, all being the same, is very disturbing to most. However, I think many people of this day in age could say, "Hey, that doesn't sound too bad. Why not?". And the reason is that we live in a day of technology. There are more e-mail accounts than social security numbers! Wow, right? And the reason why, is because technology is convienient. With an e-mail account, we can talk to people all over the world. Things such as texting make these things even more convenient. People want things to be easy in life; not have to worry about those kinds of things. Brave New World takes these conveniences to the extreme though. When everybody has a place and is always happy, all the time, there is nothing to worry about right? No emotions to deal with. No one wanting to move up in life, be better than what they are at the time. No worries because everything is technologically predictable. Although it may be easy and convenient, I'm not quite positive that that much technology is a good thing...

Hey Girly,
ReplyDeleteI like how you started with Lyotard's quote "that no knowledge will survive that cannot be translated into computer language--into quantities of information" because I think that that quote is one of the most important of Lyotard's ideals. I like how you addressed our time of technology. In class many people say they find the Brave New World society disturbing and wrong, but there probably are people out there who think it would be a good idea to mass produce children with technology (though I am not one of them). Its true that everything is being made to be more convenient, and I think everything is being condensed because people now a days are becoming lazier and dependent on technology for entertainment and focus. It is very possible that our world will turn in to the Brave New World society very soon, getting closer with every technological advancement. That is kind of scary, to think that our society could end up like that, and every person being stripped of their morality. Very scary.
Hey Jesss!
ReplyDeleteI could not agree with you more. Today's world is definately about coming up with different things to make our lives easier. Next thing you know we will live in a world like in wall-e where all we do is sit around and have robots wait on us. Have them do all the work. It is a very scary thing...I wonder what we will be like in 20 years...? well anyhow, I like how you began by Lyotard's ideas, and developed your ideas from it. Good support of these ideas.
Good job girly :)
Hey Jessie, cool blog! I agree with you that technolody is taking over the world. The texting mania has gotten out of hand. Now people even break up with each other via texting. I wonder if someday humans won't ever have face to face conversations. However, I think that even though our society is more like the BNW society than the savages we have hope in us to have family values again someday.
ReplyDeleteI thought you made a powerful agrument by connecting Postmodernism to BNW to our society today.Anywho I enjoyed reading your blog.:)
OH DANG!!!!!!!!!! GRL i super duper enjoyed your blog!!!!!!!! It was so interesting to read and i definitely concur with everything you said. Especially when you mentioned "the reason is that we live in a day of technology. There are more e-mail accounts than social security numbers!" That is totally true and what if people did agree with the society in the Brave New World? That would be scary and i hope that does not ever happen. We do want the easy things in life and i feel like humans are all selfish sometimes and we should take in consideration that there are so many of us out there that we shouldn't have to come to duplicating people when our world is going to be overpopulated one day. The more diverse is GREAT! PLus even though technology advances in the future doesn't mean it's going to be bad but i do like the idea of burning some human bodies to grow plants because when you think about it.....where are we going to burry all the people left in the world when there is no room..lol. Dependent and lazy is are good words to describe us and everything you say is sooooO true!
ReplyDeleteKeep it up!
Keep it REAL!
Keep it G!!!!
over and out
~pamcakes in da HOUSE :)
Yeah that much techno would be ridiculous!Right??? It is hard, for us youngsters especially, to think of a day before cellular devices and computers weren't around. I mean look at how quickly things have progressed even in our lifetime. Every thing is electronic and most people wouldn't even know what to do if they actually had to sit down and write a letter or send a telegram. okay the telegram is a little much, but it is true. Honestly, think about how crazy it would be for us not to be who we want to be and just have "sexual relations" with anyone. I mean talk about not having a brain scare crow. Anywho, you made some great points and i rather enjoyed reading it. I loved how i could hear you talking in it. Right? :)
