Everybody has their preconceived notions about life and how it all is suppose to end up. In Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle, there is a most peculiar idea about life. It takes a very postmodern stand and I find it very interesting...
"If you find your life tangled up with somebody else's life for no very logical reasons, that person may be a member of your karass," (ch.2). This whole idea of a karass can relate to the Lion King's "circle of life". Everybody is put on Earth to do God's bidding, but everybody helps or deters another person with everything that they do. It is almost overwhelming thinking that some random people could be very important figures in one's life... Postmodernists would find this idea of life very intriguing. Yes, it is true that one person can create a cause and effect type of thing in someone's life-say like bad manufacturing of a car could potentially create a future car accident- but it is something more to say that these things were meant to happen. The idea of Karass is almost like believing in fate. Fate is not too far off from what some people believe in, but it does veer off from the path of traditional thinking. Faith is a postmodern idea of expanding your mind to something that is hard to conceive, more than what the masses believe in.
These postmodern ideas bounce off of traditional thoughts and so called "facts" of the modern era, and they are stretched to new ideas and theories. These types of things can be seen in the first seven chapters of the novel. And one of the biggest postmodern ideas presented thus far is that of the religion explained above. Very interesting.... :)

Jessieee!!!
ReplyDeleteWell, I'd like to start off by saying that I really enjoyed your blog! As I was looking at others peoples' blogs I saw a pattern that they took a quote of Postnodernism and then applied this to their own views of Cat's Cradle. Although I did this as well, I really like how you took a concept from Cat's Cradle and then related it to Postmodernism. It was really neat! Rather than centralize Cat's Cradle around Postmodernism, you centralized Postmodernism around Cat's Cradle. I really enjoyed this.
Furthermore, I really liked your comparison of the Karass to Lion King's “circle of life”. It was very insightful. You are right though, I remember in that movie when Mufasa told Simba about how every animal related to each other and the earth. This is like a Karass. This notion that someone can completely affect or alter a person's life is so complex! But I really liked how you explained it!
Anyways....Great Blog!
Well considering the fact that I have never seen The Lion King(I know shock!), i found it enlightening to get a perspective from something other then Postmodernism first, then using both Cat's Cradle and the movie to show how it all fits into a postmodern ideas. I mean i can tell you spent a lot of time on this... ;)
ReplyDeleteI also enjoyed how you thought of a Karass like fate because it really is. However, if it's something that everyone is interested in, like let's say for instance, colorguard (haha), then is it really fate that we are all memebers of the same karass and our wampeter is guard? I mean technically we signed up for something and those people did to. But, maybe its more like fate if its just something random.
Anywho, your blog really got me thinking so i give it an A plus. :)
i really enjoyed reading your blog jessie :)
ReplyDeleteit was actually quite interesting.I agree with alli on the fact that you seemed to centralize postmodernism around cats cradle giving it a different outlook of things :)
f you find your life tangled up with somebody else's life for no very logical reasons, that person may be a member of your karass,"
This really does seem to make you think about how the most random people that you may never end up meeting or seeing can have a slight a great impact on your life. So this means your not aware of the karras your apart of or who is apart of your karras.hm intersting.and I can see how this is more of fate.hmm gets ya thinking.
This blog was really great!
